The Dietitian is a qualified professional who is responsible for the development and implementation of clinical and marketing strategies to promote the home nutrition support (enteral and parenteral nutrition) program. The Dietitian provides daily clinical support of all parenteral nutrition patients within their assigned territory and may cover multiple locations, as assigned by the Area Manager, Nutritional Services, to assure optimal coverage within the territory. The Dietitian also supports sales activity and account relationships within the assigned territory and maintains a cohesive relationship with office clinical and sales staff to maximize the effectiveness of the office’s nutrition support program.

The Dietitian is responsible for the nutritional care, education and dietary needs of all patients. Keeps abreast and shares the latest nutrition health information with staff.

Duties & Responsibilities 2

The Registered Dietitian (RD) is responsible for assessing those identified patients’ nutritional status within defined time frames. This includes overseeing that the proper priority level is given to patients. The RD calculates the nutritional need of high-risk patients (i.e., diabetic, enteral/parental, etc.) and ensures that these needs are being met. The RD is able to assess and guide the nutritional needs of all ages, including children, pregnant and lactating mothers, adults and the elderly.
In addition to initial assessment, the RD re-assesses patients in a timely manner, according to their nutrition risk level. Follows up on recommendations made on the patient to the physician.
The RD is accountable for counseling patients and their families, where applicable in food and drug interaction and nutrition education of therapeutic diets. Adapts food choices to prescribed diet to meet cultural and religious needs of patients. Documents the patient's barriers to learning, previous knowledge of diet, a method of teaching and patient's understanding on the Multidisciplinary Education Form.
- As an active member of the multidisciplinary patient care team, the Registered Dietitian participates in weekly patient rounds. Documents patient nutritional care plan on the care plan form. As part of this process, the Registered Dietitian communicates nutritional concerns of patients and assures that any related concerns are handled in an expedient manner.
- The RD is active in departmental Performance Improvement Activities.
- May need to assist patients with menu selections.

Requirements & Skills 2

Minimum one year experience in a clinical setting
- Active registration status as a Registered Dietitian in the American Dietetic Association.
- Fire Card – to be obtained within 90 days of hire
- Two years as an RD is highly desired.

Collects and analyzes relevant patient information including medical/social history, lab values, anthropometric data, diet history and medications. Estimates patient nutrient needs using evidence-based guidelines. Analyzes information to identify nutrition problems and develop appropriate care plans.
Responds to all RD referrals/consults within established timeframe. Documents nutrition assessment and intervention in accordance with hospital policy.
Assures appropriate care to patients by providing assistance with individual patient meal selection. Evaluates the patient’s diet order and recommends changes as appropriate. Develops individual meal plans that meet patient nutrition needs; optimizes food intake by honoring individual food preferences. Prescribes snacks/supplements as needed.
Provides nutrition education to patients and family members; evaluates effectiveness of teaching; provides follow-up recommendations as needed. Develops educational materials as needed.
Evaluates appropriateness of enteral and parenteral nutrition support, including energy, protein, micronutrient and fluid provision. Makes necessary recommendations in a timely and professional manner.
- Coordinates nutrition care plans and advocates for patient nutrition needs among other clinicians and dietary staff members. Provides education on food and nutrition-related topics. Conducts in-service training when needed.
- Supervises patient trayline. Ensures that employees are on task and that meals are assembled in a timely manner; corrects sanitation concerns as necessary. Checks meal trays for quality, accuracy, diet order & food allergies. Communicates problems/concerns with director and assists with documentation.
- Maintains current nutrition knowledge.

Ability to meet minimum hospital hiring standards.
4 year Bachelor’s degree
Must be in good standing with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) and maintain a current Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) registration card
- May consider a candidate who is RDN-eligible; if considered must obtain CDR within 3 months of employment
- Must obtain State Certified Dietitian (CD) Card within 90 days of employment (or 90 days from RDN Registration date if RDN-Eligible)
