The Nurse Anesthetist is a registered professional nurse who, has completed a program of nurse anesthesia approved by the Council on Accreditation Programs and has passed the certification examination administered by the Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetist or its predecessor. In collaboration with an attending anesthesiologist, is responsible for providing comprehensive care to the patients at the Hospital. The Nurse Anesthetist's functions are an expanded role with guidelines of the Nurse Practice Act, Departments of Anesthesiology and Nursing, and the Nurse practitioner clinical protocols.

Duties & Responsibilities 2

Administer general anesthetics to render patients insensible to pain during surgical, obstetrical, and other medical procedures; take necessary remedial action to aspirate secretions from throat larynx, and trachea as required.
Determine, set up, and prepare necessary drugs, supplies, and equipment for the administration of anesthetics; assemble the gas machine and test to insure proper functioning; ensure availability of proper type blood for emergency use.
Study patient records to determine probable effects of anesthetic on the patient; monitor vital signs during the procedure; take necessary action to ensure a near normal physiological status of the patient.
Prepare patients for anesthesia including explaining procedures and positioning patients on the operating room table; record the condition of the patient and the type of anesthetic used on the patient's chart.
Assist in moving a patient from the operating room to the recovery area; check the patient periodically and take remedial measures to alleviate unfavorable post-anesthesia effects as required.
Supervise and instruct student nurse anesthetists in the administration of general anesthetics; assist in evaluating clinical performance and progress; instruct residents, interns, and allied health students in the procedures and techniques of anesthesiology.
- Disassemble equipment and clean the work area; report necessary equipment repairs and adjustments to the proper personnel.
- Maintain records of each anesthetic administered and prepare periodic reports related to activities.
- Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Requirements & Skills 2

Master's degree from a school of nurse anesthesia approved by the State Accrediting Agency and the Council on Accreditation of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) required.

- Must have current or compact RN licensure.
- BLS required.

Duties & Responsibilities 5

Monitor anesthesia care and manage patient anesthesia experience, perform preoperative evaluations and preparations, administer Spinal, Epidural, local Bier Block, Auxiliary Block, and general anesthetics, monitor patient reactions to anesthesia and surgery, manage fluid therapy and perform post-operative evaluations.
Provide contemporary regional and general anesthesia care including pediatric, geriatric, obstetric, and surgical specialties.
Administer appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic nerve blocks in the treatment of acute and chronic pain.
- Oversee the activities of the recovery room and administer appropriate drug and respiratory therapy in the recovery room setting.

Degree/Education: The CRNAs shall have graduated from an accredited educational college or university, and be a graduate of an approved anesthesia program.
Certification The HCW shall be certified as a CRNA and recertified every 2 years by the Council on Recertification of Nurse Anesthetists.
Possess and maintain a current unrestricted license to practice in any of the 50 United States, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam, or the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) - Basic Life Support

Graduate of an accredited nurse anesthesia educational program approved by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) at the time the program was completed by the applicant.
Current, full and unrestricted license as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States or the District of Columbia.

Duties & Responsibilities 8

Performs pre-anesthetic and post-anesthetic assessment and evaluation of the patient and documents findings. This includes obtaining informed consent from the patient, requesting consultations and /or diagnostic studies, and ordering pre-anesthetic medications.
In collaboration with the anesthesiologist, determines the appropriate anesthetic plan of management and manages all aspects of anesthesia care including preoperative, perioperative, and immediate postoperative care.
Maintains complete and accurate documentation of care for all procedures.
Provides airway management and/or intubations for emergent, and non-emergent, and resuscitation situations throughout the hospital.
Provides consultation for ventilatory care throughout the hospital.
- Checks all equipment and agents to be used in the administration of the anesthetic to be sure it is in safe working order. Reports all malfunctioning equipment to the appropriate personnel.
- Checks all resuscitative anesthesia equipment before the beginning of the first surgery of the day. Any malfunctioning or missing equipment will be reported to the appropriate personnel.
- Records all pertinent events taking place during the induction of, maintenance of, and emergence from anesthesia, including the dosage and duration of all anesthetic agents, other drugs, intravenous fluids, and blood or blood components on all patients that have received anesthesia care.

Graduation from a school of anesthesia accredited by the AANA.
