Under general supervision, the Medical Records Technician is responsible for paraprofessional medical records technical work of average difficulty and supervisory work of routine difficulty in a hospital or institutional setting; and performs related work as required. An employee in this class is responsible for certified medical records coding and is in charge of a medical records unit at a small hospital operation under the director of standards compliance and records or acts as an assistant to a medical records administrator at a large medical records site. An employee in this class assists in identifying problems affecting patient care through the quality assurance audit process and the maintenance of patient records in an orderly, standardized manner. An employee audits the medical records process and is responsible for the follow-up of patient care audit action plans. This class differs from that of Medical Records Assistant in that an incumbent of the latter maintains and codes medical records without the responsibility of supervision over subordinate staff.
