Job summary 1

This is an operational position which encompasses the day-to-day law enforcement work for the city under the general supervision of a designated supervisor. The Police Officer performs a wide variety of police and law enforcement activities that are primarily service oriented and include dispensing information, arbitrating disputes, providing assistance through referrals, property protection, crime prevention, traffic, detective, investigative, and other public safety services. Duties are performed in accordance with state statutes and established city/department policies, procedures, guidelines, and ordinances. Officers must be able to act without close supervision and must be able to exercise independent judgment. Work is reviewed through observation, conferences and review of written reports for results obtained and adherence to established policies and procedures.

The Police Officer works under the general supervision of the Chief of Police. A Police Officer is a highly visible, critical public safety individual and must be committed to excellence, professionalism and community service. The Police Officer is responsible for enforcement of traffic and criminal laws along with parking regulations. Our officers are supplied with firearm and uniforms. Candidates must undergo an extensive hiring process which includes a stringent background investigation/security clearance, psychological evaluation, a structured interview, drug screening, and other testing. This position is subject to a pre-employment criminal background check and drug screen. A criminal conviction or arrest pending adjudication alone shall not disqualify an applicant except as provided by law. Any criminal history will be evaluated in relationship to job responsibilities and business necessity. The information obtained in these reports will be used in a confidential, non-discriminatory manner consistent with state and federal law.

A Police Officer provides law enforcement services to the citizens and performs related duties as assigned. May serve as School Resource Officer providing a safe learning environment; teaches classes and serves as counselor to students; serves as a tool in building the relationship between the school and the officer by promoting a positive image of law enforcement; interacts with students and obtains information regarding gangs, and at-risk students. Upon completion of the required certification, may serve as a K-9 officer providing the city with a trained canine used in the location of suspects and the detection of drugs; maintains currency of certification through ongoing training as required; provides the K-9 with proper nutrition, training, care, grooming, and practice to maintain its skills; keeps the K-9 at his/her home as a regular part of the family. Upon completion of the required certification, may serve as a Field Training Officer providing field training to new or returning officers; provides the necessary instruction and guidance under field conditions to produce a functioning Police Officer; provides ongoing training and guidance throughout the one-year period of a new recruit""s training process. Opon completion of the required certification, serves as a motor Officer investigating and documenting traffic collisions, DUI and traffic related complaints (e.g. speeding, running a stop sign or stoplight, etc.); serves on traffic collision team.

Police Officer is charged with protecting life and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances including the prevention, detection and investigation of crimes and civil infractions and exercising of arresting authority. Although most assignments will be patrol, experienced officer has the opportunity for special assignments in areas such as SWAT, Traffic, Detectives, Canine, Narcotics, Gangs, and Child Abuse. The ideal candidate must maintain self-discipline and credibility through honest and ethical behavior and must have strong skills and abilities in a wide variety of areas including communication, creative problem solving, community service, teamwork and leadership.
