Step into the heart of steelmaking
Picture your first shift at United States Steel — Granite City Works: you gear up, check your tools, and head to the production floor where massive equipment hums and materials move nonstop. As a Utility Technician supporting mill operations, you’ll help keep the line moving by handling materials, operating basic and mobile equipment, and pitching in on equipment upkeep across the plant.
A day in the life
- Use hand tools, pneumatic equipment, gauges, oxygen lances, power-actuated tools, and torches to support production and service units.
- Handle, transport, and process materials and product across the mill.
- Work safely around hot, heavy, or sharp materials and hazardous chemicals.
- Assist with equipment inspections and basic maintenance tasks.
- Operate mobile equipment in a heavy industrial setting.
- Adapt to changing assignments in different mill areas — conditions can be hot, cold, dirty, greasy, wet, and noisy, and you may work near molten metal.
Your growth path
After brief on-the-job training, you will be expected to move into a Utility Technician role operating overhead and mobile cranes of various sizes and types, tractors, trucks, dozers, loaders, boom trucks, and feeders.
