What You’ll Do

  • Service, maintain, test, and repair generator systems from 2KW to 3MW in both shop and field settings.
  • Perform engine services, conduct load banking, test and repair automatic transfer switches (ATS), carry out generator-end testing, and evaluate complete systems.
  • Troubleshoot diesel and gaseous fuel systems; execute both minor and major engine repairs.
  • Diagnose electrical, mechanical, engine, and component issues using the correct diagnostic tools and technical literature.
  • Interpret electrical/mechanical drawings, schematics, manuals, and service documentation to guide accurate repairs.
  • Assess parts for reuse, source and install replacements, and perform work to manufacturer specifications and guidelines.
  • Install complete gensets and related peripherals using engineering-supplied materials and specs.
  • Work primarily off-site with minimal oversight while maintaining strong productivity and workmanship quality.
  • Produce clear, thorough, and legible service reports.
  • Uphold quality standards; coach apprentices and collaborate with other technicians to deliver timely, high-caliber repairs.
  • Communicate technical issues and recommendations to customers in a way that’s easy to understand, representing the company professionally.
  • Participate in after-hours on-call rotations; be prepared for irregular schedules including weekends and holidays.
  • Travel occasionally, including overnight; operate heavy equipment, forklifts, and mobile cranes safely in line with OSHA requirements.
  • Follow all company policies, safety procedures, and standard work practices; perform other duties as business needs require.

What You Bring

  • Multiple years in generator service or equivalent military/technical background.
  • Hands-on skill in mechanical and electrical troubleshooting; experience with diesel and/or gaseous engines.
  • Ability to diagnose electrical and mechanical systems and read electrical/mechanical drawings.
  • Clear written and verbal communication; comfort working independently with limited supervision.
  • Customer-facing communication skills with coworkers, technicians, and apprentices.
  • Safe, proper use of common hand tools and diagnostic equipment.
  • Personal tool set including: multimeter; standard/metric socket and wrench sets; screwdrivers; Allen keys; pliers; crimpers, and similar tools.
  • Consistency in following procedures and manufacturer repair guidelines; accurate documentation habits.
  • Physical ability to perform field service work; valid driver’s license and willingness to travel to customer sites.
  • Openness to weekends, holidays, irregular hours, and on-call rotation; willingness to travel with occasional overnights.

Preferred Expertise

  • Automatic transfer switches (ATS) and static transfer switches.
  • Multi-unit paralleling systems.
  • Technical/vocational schooling in electrical, mechanical, automotive, diesel, transportation, or related fields.
  • Commercial or residential electrical background; military mechanical/electrical experience.
  • Hands-on servicing of gensets from 2KW to 3MW, including diesel and gaseous fuel systems.
  • Experience with load banks and generator test equipment.
  • OSHA-related equipment operation familiarity.

Work Realities

  • Split between shop and customer/job sites; frequent travel to field locations.
  • Overnights and extended or irregular hours may be required; availability for emergency after-hours service as part of on-call rotation.
  • Regular exposure to operating engines, electrical equipment, heavy machinery, fuel systems, and industrial environments.
  • Operate or work around forklifts, mobile cranes, and other heavy equipment safely.
  • Use hand tools and diagnostic equipment safely and effectively while complying with OSHA and company safety rules.
