QA MANAGER IS THIS YOU?
SUMMARY
Our projects are creating amazing video game-related products. We are looking for an independent contractor QA Manager to join us in building and leading our Test Drive UX/QA program team. As such, you will have P&L responsibility to maintain a high quality bar for internal and external partner game products for multiple platforms (mobile, consoles, PC). The QA Manager will report to the COO or their designated representative and work alongside other BGV staff (Release Director, Executive Producer, Associate Producers, Studio developers, etc.) and other top game Industry professionals who oversee projects from beginning to release. The estimated time per month is 20+ hours (more initially to ramp up), working up to a full-time position with salary plus rev share. The Ideal Candidate should be an experienced leader with 5+ years in QA for AA and/or AAA game companies who enjoys working collaboratively with all disciplines, fosters teamwork, and builds trust with leadership and developers alike. The QA Manager should be proficient in developing test plans, processes that will ensure the highest quality of product and providing value to customers, be familiar with industry dev cycles, and able to communicate well with developers. Ideally, you are passionate about games.
Remuneration is based upon a percent of the revenues generated by your team’s efforts in establishing themselves as a leader in indie game testing and consulting. Multiple internal products are in the pipeline, and there’s no shortage of external studios that need our help.
A DAY IN THE LIFE OF OUR QA MANAGER…
Responsible for the recruiting top QA talent for the Test Drive UX/QA program team, implementing processes and procedures for tiered testing based on testers’ experience, and managing the budget for said team. Focusing on developing creative QA strategies that combine multiple testing methodologies to improve test coverage and iteration cycle times. Define and provide visibility for critical game quality metrics to leadership (and customers). Uphold high quality assurance industry standards for game testing cycles to ensure a smooth and timely release of game products across various distribution (1st Party) platforms. Responsible for ensuring that resources, timelines, and the overall quality of the released products are all considered and meet platform (and BGV) requirements.
Typical daily responsibilities of a QA Manager include:
Quality assurance planning: Collaborating with our executive producer, project leads, customers and marketing teams to determine milestones and release time-lines for each project, and monitor release life-cycles.
Risk management: Identification of risks (both opportunities and threats) that may impact timely release, work with project leads to develop strategies to handle various product release risks, and execute said strategies.
Quality checks: Building collaboration between the Test Drive UX/QAprogram team, Marketing, Dev and customer teams to ensure each project meets our BGV Certification standards for each platform.
Metrics: Establish KPIs, measure and report program progress, as well as recommend and implement process improvements as needed.
YOUR SUPERPOWER SKILL SETS…
Must Have:
Entrepreneurial mindset: Possesses strong initiative, risk-tolerance, creativity and resilience. Comfortable with planning, as well as building and managing teams to achieve said plans. Either conducting, or collaborating with the business development officer, to acquire and develop new UX/QA customers.
Leadership: Ability to lead and motivate the Test Drive UX/QA program team to perform at a high level of efficiency (and effort).
Management skills: Expert with processes required for efficiently testing and reporting on the various products being reviewed; experience with good project management practices; comfortable seeking expert judgment on how to do a job better (is coachable); collaborating in a team environment.
Hard Skills:
Game development and testing knowledge: A sufficient understanding of various game development standards and the integration of testing practices as it applies to project milestones.
Platform requirements: A thorough understanding and familiarity with multiple game platforms (e.g., PCs, consoles, mobile, etc.) and their requirements for optimum performance.
Soft Skills:
Collaboration/coordination: Liaise across multiple products, internal and external teams, and other stakeholders to ensure quality timely releases of product. Ability to manage staggered release schedules across concurrent projects.
Communications: Strong organizational and communication skills (both written and verbal), and ability to work well in a team environment.
Nice to Have:
PM Knowledge: Strong understanding of various project management methodologies (PMBOK®, Agile, Waterfall, Lean, Six Sigma, etc.). Familiarity of fundamental business processes.
