Healthcare Regulatory Defense Counsel (Administrative Law)

  • Houston, TX
  • 150,000 - 190,000 USD Hourly

About Our Boutique Practice

For over two decades, our Houston-based boutique has paired big-firm horsepower with the responsiveness and care of a tight-knit team. With 100+ years of combined attorney experience, we advocate for physicians, medical groups, healthcare businesses, and facilities across Texas and nationwide in complex regulatory, administrative, and litigation matters.

A Day in the Role

You arrive to a new OIG recoupment notice for a physician practice. Before noon, you map out a response strategy, analyze claims data, and brief the client on exposure and next steps. After lunch, you prepare for an Informal Settlement Conference before the Texas Medical Board and coordinate supporting documentation from the provider. You close the day refining a memorandum on risk mitigation for a multi-state healthcare business facing parallel payer audits—then outline arguments for an upcoming administrative hearing.

What You'll Tackle

  • Defend providers in medical recoupment investigations brought by the OIG, commercial insurers, and government payors.
  • Lead administrative licensure matters before the Texas Medical Board, Board of Nursing, and the Department of Health and Human Services.
  • Handle investigations, informal settlement conferences, hearings, and appeals across the full administrative lifecycle.
  • Deliver practical regulatory guidance on compliance obligations and risk reduction.
  • Prepare polished responses to subpoenas, audits, and record requests from state and federal agencies.
  • Draft motions, briefs, advisory memoranda, and agency correspondence with clarity and precision.
  • Partner directly with clients to assess exposure, develop defense strategies, and navigate regulatory actions.

What You Bring

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
  • Active Texas Bar license in good standing.
  • 5+ years of experience in healthcare regulatory work, administrative proceedings, or related litigation.
  • Background representing physicians, nurses, or healthcare entities before state and federal administrative bodies.
  • Proven capability managing medical recoupment investigations initiated by the OIG or private insurers.
  • Outstanding research, writing, and advocacy skills.
  • Ability to work onsite in Houston while collaborating closely with colleagues and clients.

  • 401(k) with employer contribution.
  • Paid time off.
