Utility-Scale BESS Project Engineer (Grid Integration)

  • Juno Beach, FL
  • 48 - 52 USD Hourly

Shape the future of grid-scale energy storage

Picture a day where you translate ambitious renewable goals into detailed engineering designs, then walk a site to confirm that every conduit, foundation, and interconnection aligns with the plan. As a Project Engineer on our Utility Scale Energy Storage team, you guide battery energy storage systems from early concept through commissioning, collaborating with project managers, suppliers, construction partners, and cross-functional stakeholders to maximize performance and reliability.

What your day may look like

  • Lead the design phase for large-scale BESS, engineering major components and coordinating multi-discipline resources.
  • Scrutinize drawings and studies to catch inconsistencies early, drive corrective actions, and raise the bar on design quality and efficiency.
  • Develop clear, comprehensive technical scopes of work for contracts and vendor engagements.
  • Work hand-in-hand with project managers from inception to completion, influencing engineering decisions and keeping milestones on track.
  • Track technical issues and progress; surface risks early and propose mitigation plans.
  • Partner with suppliers to specify and integrate major equipment, ensuring seamless systems and controls integration.
  • Translate equipment specifications into actionable requirements, ensure unambiguous communication, and recommend practical solutions.
  • Navigate permitting needs, propose strategies to address legal and code-related challenges, and recommend site design improvements.
  • Support logistics and construction, performing technical due diligence and data analysis to optimize system performance.
  • Consult across internal and external teams to propose storage solutions that elevate BESS performance.
  • Take on additional responsibilities as needed to move projects forward.

Travel

Up to 25 percent for site walks, supplier meetings, FATs, and commissioning support.

Preferred experience

  • Subject-matter expertise in substation or utility-scale energy storage design and or project management, with depth in one or more: power electronics, battery storage system design, substation design, generation tie design, data centers.
  • Background in designing or operating large-scale power generation or processing facilities under regulatory constraints while maximizing performance and reliability of complex systems.
  • Hands-on familiarity with construction methods: foundations, trenching, electrical terminations and testing, and best-in-class safety practices.
  • Strong grasp of energy storage technologies, including battery chemistries, power conversion systems, and DC-DC converters.
  • Lithium-ion safety and codes: UL1973, UL9540, UL9540A, NFPA 855, NFPA 70E, NEC, and applicable IFC or IBC sections.
  • Experience with interconnection studies and GIA material modification adjustment processes, particularly within WECC and CAISO.
  • Construction permitting and contracting expertise.
  • Demonstrated maturity in technical leadership and ownership of specialized technical objectives.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; able to convey complex technical and non-technical concepts to varied audiences.

Education and background

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering (or related field) from an ABET-accredited program.
  • 5 or more years of proven engineering experience.
