Industrial Equipment Reliability Technician (CNC/Robotics)
Step into a day where your troubleshooting instincts keep a world-class manufacturing operation moving. At Powell — an engineer-to-order manufacturer of switchgear — you’ll join a tight-knit maintenance team at our Houston, TX 77075 facility, safeguarding uptime on advanced production assets.
A day in the life
Your shift kicks off with preventive checks in our Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS). You’ll review work orders, scan equipment histories, and prioritize tasks based on safety and production needs. One hour you’re fine-tuning a CNC laser cutting cell; the next, you’re diagnosing a robotic welding fault, swapping a pneumatic valve, or tracing a control device through an electrical schematic.
Between calls, you’ll plan and stage parts (pulling numbers from equipment drawings and parts lists), collaborate with operators and engineers, and complete detailed records. Throughout the day, you’ll follow strict safety and environmental practices while navigating heights, traffic lanes, hydraulics, and heavy machinery with moving parts.
What you’ll take on
- Execute routine and preventive maintenance on manufacturing and fabrication assets, including CNC Laser Cutting, CNC Turret Punch Press, Robotic Welding, Automated Material Handling, and Automated Powder Coat Painting systems.
- Read and interpret assembly drawings, equipment layouts, electrical schematics, and parts lists to diagnose and resolve issues.
- Troubleshoot and repair electrical circuits (occasional), control devices, hydraulics, and pneumatics.
- Use the CMMS to follow work order procedures and document actions accurately.
- Partner with cross-functional teams; assist crew members and contribute in a collaborative, team-first environment.
- Adhere to all plant safety and environmental policies and guidelines.
Who succeeds here
- Comfort with computers and CMMS; proficient in Microsoft Suite and digital record-keeping for troubleshooting/maintenance.
- Strong math skills; solid mechanical and electrical knowledge with manual dexterity and strong mechanical aptitude.
- Self-driven change agent who works well on a team and performs with minimal direction.
- Fluent in English with clear written and verbal communication.
- Skilled at reading mechanical and electrical schematics and prioritizing decisively under pressure.
- Hands-on capability with hand/power tools, industrial machines, digital cameras, phones, scanners, and controls.
- Electrical troubleshooting and repair across low voltage (12 V DC) through high voltage (480 V AC 3-Phase).
- Willingness to work long hours and weekends and concentrate in a noisy environment when needed.
Work environment & physical demands
- Safety-sensitive role in a temperature-controlled industrial setting with occasional outdoor tasks.
- PPE required (safety shoes, hard hats/bump caps, safety glasses, hearing protection, safety harnesses, and respirators when necessary).
- Frequent ladder use (step, A-frame, etc.) and elevated work up to ~20 feet with proper lifts and fall protection.
- Close/distance/color vision, peripheral/depth perception, and focus adjustments; strong hand–eye coordination.
