Refrigeration Technician

Position Summary

The Refrigeration Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of refrigeration systems across university buildings, including academic facilities, residence halls, laboratories, and dining services. This role ensures all refrigeration equipment operates safely, efficiently, and in compliance with environmental and institutional standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive maintenance on refrigeration systems including walk-in coolers, freezers, ice machines, and chillers
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical issues in refrigeration systems
  • Monitor system performance and ensure proper temperature control in critical university areas such as labs, food service, and housing
  • Respond to emergency repair requests and participate in on-call rotation as needed
  • Maintain compliance with EPA, OSHA, and university safety standards
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance, repairs, and inspections using work order systems
  • Assist with installation and commissioning of new refrigeration equipment
  • Work collaboratively with facilities staff and external contractors
  • Ensure energy efficiency and recommend system improvements where applicable

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Technical training in refrigeration or equivalent experience
  • EPA Section 608 Certification (Type I, II, or Universal preferred or required)
  • Two or more years of experience in refrigeration maintenance (institutional or commercial preferred)
  • Strong troubleshooting and mechanical aptitude
  • Ability to read schematics, blueprints, and technical manuals
  • Valid driver’s license

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in higher education, healthcare, or large campus environments
  • Knowledge of building automation systems
  • Electrical troubleshooting experience
  • Strong communication and documentation skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Work Environment

  • Work performed across indoor and outdoor campus locations
  • Exposure to mechanical rooms, rooftops, and confined spaces
  • Occasional lifting up to 50 pounds
  • On-call and emergency response duties may be required
