A day in the life

  • Begin with a review of schematics and layout notes, confirming dimensions, materials, and sequence.
  • Lay out and mark steel plate and shapes, then cut and form components to size.
  • Fit up and align frames, bulkheads, and deck sections, verifying squareness, level, and plumb.
  • Perform fabrication and supporting weld tasks as needed to secure and reinforce assemblies.
  • Check work against specifications and safety standards, making adjustments to meet tolerances.
  • Coordinate with welders, pipefitters, and other trades to keep milestones on track.
  • Wrap up with tool care and housekeeping, maintaining a clean, hazard-free work area.

What you bring

  • High school diploma or equivalent; trade or vocational training in shipfitting/fabrication preferred.
  • Proven experience fitting steel in a shipyard or maritime environment.
  • Working knowledge of shipbuilding methods, common materials, and safety regulations.
  • Fluency reading blueprints, sketches, and technical drawings.
  • Comfort operating hand and power tools safely and effectively.
