A day in the life
You start your shift with a clear plan from your Group Leader and a Maintenance Machinist A. As you report to the department Manager, you’ll move between conventional and CNC equipment, selecting materials, setting feeds and speeds, and turning complex drawings into precision parts that keep our production assets running at their best.
What you’ll do
- Own machining tasks from start to finish under general supervision, taking initiative to drive work to completion.
- Create and rework components per requisitions, blueprints, and technical drawings.
- Set feeds, speeds, and (where applicable) temperatures for safe, high-quality operation.
- Operate conventional and CNC machines for cutting, punching, forming, drilling, tapping, turning, milling, grinding, and stamping to produce or reshape parts and assemblies.
- Select, measure, and prepare raw stock to specification before processing.
- Rework and machine new and spare production parts; repair maintenance components as needed.
- Verify tolerances using calipers, micrometers, dial indicators, and other precision instruments.
- Order and maintain project-related materials and help keep organized records of work and repairs.
- Collaborate closely with Engineering, Production Team Leads, Managers, Group Leaders, and fellow tradespeople to achieve results.
- Follow company procedures and applicable regulations; practice and promote safe work methods and report maintenance/safety issues promptly.
- Adjust your schedule as needed to meet demands; weekend and holiday work may be required. Additional shifts (2nd, 3rd, split, and occasional 12-hour shifts) may also be scheduled.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the department Manager.
What you’ll bring
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings.
- Hands-on knowledge of machining and grinding: sequencing, feeds, and cutting speeds.
- Experience setting up machine tools for precision work.
- Basic CNC skills, including writing and editing machine programs.
- Applied math skills to calculate dimensions, speeds, and feeds.
- Proficiency with measuring tools: calipers, micrometers, dial indicators, etc.
- Strong attendance, mechanical aptitude, organization, and communication.
- Team-oriented, self-driven, safety- and quality-focused; works with minimal supervision.
- Ability to lift up to 75 lbs occasionally.
- Comfort operating shop equipment (hoists, forklifts, scissor lifts, etc.).
- Ability to work in confined spaces, climb ladders, and work at heights up to 50 feet.
- Ability to wear a respirator when required.
- Continuous learning mindset to advance technical skills.
- Ability to understand and apply specifications and procedures related to the role.
Tools and technologies
