At 3:00 pm, you step into a clean, orderly inspection booth and bring critical rail wheels one step closer to service. You verify your gauges, check the magnetic particle solution, and set up ultrasonic parameters to ASNT specifications and AAR requirements. One by one, wheels move through your station. You scan them visually, run ultrasonic tests to interpret defect codes, and perform magnetic particle examinations to uncover surface and subsurface flaws. When you find an issue, you mark the wheel clearly with crayon and document the details before the next piece arrives.
As production flows, you periodically move to the final line to confirm stamping legibility and depth, inspect chamfers and stenciling, and verify bores, hubs, plates, and pads. With a flange gauge, you measure flange thickness and height. You confirm overall cleanliness, update inventory records in the computer system, and alert your supervisor immediately if defect trends spike. Throughout the week, you keep supplies stocked and the booth spotless, check master tape lines for accuracy on the final line, and record wheel weight, bore size, and type when assigned there. When needed, you lend a hand in the lab to build familiarity, assist with breakdowns to restore production, take wheel samples for analysis, and handle other duties that keep quality moving.
