VTL CNC Turning Specialist — Heavy Steel Components

CNC Turning Specialist (VTL) — Ashland, Kentucky

Competitive hourly pay | Heavy Industrial Service Center

A day in this role

As your night shift begins at our partner’s Ashland, KY service hub, you’ll power up a massive Vertical Turret Lathe with a 3-meter swing and prepare to tackle heavy steel mill components—casting rolls, mill rolls, roll chocks, and other robust mechanical parts bound for producers across North America. The program for the job is already created by the site’s programmers. Your craft is in execution: setting up tooling, loading the program, making offset and feed/speed tweaks, and keeping a vigilant eye on cut quality.

You’ll move from setup to production smoothly, reading engineering drawings and GD&T, confirming dimensions, and catching issues before they turn into scrap. This is a hands-on machinist role—no programming or process planning—pure machine operation on large-format CNC turning equipment.

About the operation

Mural has partnered with a global industrial equipment manufacturer whose Ashland service center repairs and refurbishes large-scale steel mill components. You’ll be part of the team that returns worn components to service-ready condition with precision and consistency.

Schedule and overtime

This is a night shift position. Standard shifts are 8 hours. When demand increases, shifts can extend to 12 hours and may include weekends. Overtime is tied directly to production needs and is a required aspect of the job.

What you’ll do

  • Operate large-format CNC turning equipment (primary: 3 m capacity VTL) to machine and refurbish heavy components to print
  • Handle tooling setup, load programs provided by onsite programmers, and adjust offsets, feeds, and speeds as needed
  • Monitor cut quality and verify results against engineering drawings and GD&T
  • Recognize machining issues early and take corrective action to prevent scrap

What you bring

  • Hands-on CNC operation experience in turning, milling, or both (manual-only backgrounds will not be considered)
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and GD&T
  • Confidence setting tooling and making offset adjustments with limited programmer support
  • Background in large-format CNC or heavy industrial machining is a strong advantage
  • Vertical Turret Lathe experience is highly prioritized
  • Availability for night shift work with production-driven overtime and occasional weekends
  • Basic G-code reading ability is a plus (helpful for night operations)
