A day in the life
You start your shift walking the production floors and yard, greeting operators and scanning for what others might miss. You document your observations, highlight hazards and unsafe actions, and brief plant leadership so fixes happen fast. You swing through the maintenance shops, then circle back to monitor forklifts, cranes, loaders, and yard trucks—keeping a close eye on mobile equipment safety.
Mid-morning, a near miss is reported. You help gather facts, interview employees, and record findings so the true root cause is identified and preventive actions are clear. Between tasks, you support environmental compliance items and organize OSHA-related records, including Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and other safety documentation.
After lunch, you welcome new hires for safety orientation, lead a toolbox talk, and coach proper PPE use on the floor. Before wrapping up, you update inspection logs, verify training records, and inspect safety gear—fire extinguishers, eyewash stations, emergency equipment, and fall protection—so everything is ready if it’s ever needed. You end the day by contributing to a safety committee discussion that shapes upcoming initiatives.
How you’ll contribute
- Conduct and document routine safety inspections across production areas, yard operations, and maintenance shops; identify unsafe conditions/behaviors and regulatory gaps and communicate findings to plant leadership.
- Support environmental compliance activities as assigned.
- Assist with safety monitoring for mobile equipment (forklifts, cranes, loaders, yard trucks).
- Assist with incident, near-miss, property damage, and injury investigations by gathering facts, interviewing, and documenting for root cause and preventive actions.
- Help maintain compliance with OSHA standards, including organizing SDS and safety records.
- Assist with new employee safety orientation, training, and toolbox talks; reinforce safe work practices and correct PPE use on the production floor.
- Maintain safety files, training records, inspection logs, and compliance documentation.
- Inspect safety equipment: fire extinguishers, eyewash stations, emergency equipment, and fall protection.
- Participate in safety committee meetings and support safety programs and initiatives.
Qualifications
Education
- High School Diploma or GED required.
Experience
- Entry-level role; 1–2 years of safety experience preferred but not required.
- Manufacturing, construction, or industrial experience preferred.
Skills and competencies
- Foundational knowledge of workplace safety principles.
- Strong attention to detail and keen observation.
- Clear, confident communication and ability to work with employees at all levels.
- Hazard recognition aptitude.
- Basic computer proficiency (Microsoft Word, Excel, email).
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Physical requirements
- Frequent walking throughout plant and yard.
- Work in outdoor environments and varying weather conditions.
- Climb ladders and access elevated areas.
- Occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.
- Wear required PPE: hard hat, safety glasses, high-visibility vest, steel-toe boots, hearing protection, and gloves.
Work environment
Time is split between office work (approximately 50%) and plant/field activities (approximately 50%) with exposure to noise, dirt, heat, cold, oil, fumes, and similar elements.
