Precision Manual Lathe Machinist

Picture your day beginning at a well-organized workstation. You review a print, choose the right stock, and dial in a conventional lathe to bring a critical metal component to life—exactly to spec. You lean on your mechanical know-how, your feel for the machine, and your eye for detail to deliver parts that pass inspection the first time. That’s the rhythm of this role.

About the Work

In this position, you will operate manual and semi-automatic lathes to manufacture precision parts from a range of metals and alloys. You’ll move seamlessly from setup to measurement to inspection, ensuring every component meets drawing requirements and quality expectations.

What You’ll Do

  • Set up and run manual or semi-automatic lathes to produce close-tolerance metal parts to specification.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings to plan each job.
  • Use precision measurement tools (e.g., micrometers, calipers, gauges) to verify dimensions and accuracy.
  • Inspect finished components for defects and confirm compliance with quality standards.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance on lathes and related shop equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve equipment or process issues as they arise.
  • Follow safety procedures consistently and maintain a clean, orderly work area.
  • Handle additional tasks and support related duties as assigned.

What You Bring

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • 2+ years of hands-on lathe operation in a manufacturing environment.
  • Proficiency reading and interpreting mechanical drawings, prints, and schematics.
  • Solid command of precision measuring instruments and their proper use.
  • Meticulous attention to detail with a track record of producing high-quality work.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the capability to troubleshoot equipment issues.
  • Commitment to safety practices and maintaining a safe, organized workspace.

Materials & Methods

You’ll work with a variety of metals and alloys, choosing appropriate tooling and speeds/feeds to achieve surface finish, concentricity, and tolerance requirements.
