Industrial Controls and Mechanical Maintenance Technologist

  • Newark, NJ
  • 34.58 - 44.23 USD Hourly

Imagine this scenario

A production line is trending toward failure—subtle vibration changes, heat readings a few degrees high. You pull up the CMMS history, cross‑reference predictive data, and trace the issue to a misaligned assembly. You machine a replacement part on the lathe, fine‑tune a control loop, and bring the system back within spec—all while keeping the area spotless and teammates informed. That’s a routine win in this role.

Role overview

As the go‑to problem solver, you will combine expert break‑fix capability with disciplined preventive maintenance. You’ll inspect, disassemble, adjust, replace, reassemble, and validate performance across mechanical and electrical systems—then document everything so the next decision is faster and smarter.

Key responsibilities

  • Execute advanced maintenance, from fault isolation to final verification, on machinery, controls, and supporting utilities.
  • Observe equipment under load, remove defective elements, correct instrument settings, and perform functional and electrical tests.
  • Find and procure repair parts and materials; complete work independently to recognized standards.
  • Set up and run machining operations (lathe, drill press, grinder, etc.) to fabricate/restore parts; perform welding when appropriate.
  • Maintain rigorous 5S and housekeeping; uphold a safety‑first mindset.
  • Drive continuous improvement projects focused on process quality, measurable results, and cost reduction.
  • Keep accurate records; analyze CMMS data to spot trends and shape maintenance plans.
  • Diagnose and resolve control system issues across hardware, software, and configuration layers.
  • Apply predictive maintenance tools to capture and interpret condition data.
  • Support and mentor peers; provide guidance to small teams; stretch into advanced tasks to expand your expertise.
  • Pursue ongoing on‑the‑job training and self‑study for continuous career growth.
  • Comply with all safety rules, technical instructions, and regulations; maintain situational awareness and report hazards.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Associate degree with a technical concentration and 3+ years in general industry; or 5+ years of related general‑industry experience; or completion of the ATS Technician Progression Program.
  • Comprehensive understanding of electrical, mechanical, fluid power, and control systems; demonstrated troubleshooting and repair skills.
  • Proficiency with common hand tools and appropriate specialty tools.

Hourly pay: $34.58 – $44.23

Physical requirements and environment

Expect frequent standing and walking; regular use of hands/fingers; reaching; climbing and balancing (often using ladders or lifts); and work in tight areas requiring stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. Communication in loud spaces is common. You’ll occasionally sit and may lift or move loads over 50 pounds. Close and color vision are routinely needed. You may encounter outdoor weather and electrical shock risks at times. The factory environment is typically very loud and may include exposure to hazardous materials and greasy or slippery floors.
