We are seeking a highly skilled
Tool and Die Maker
to join our automotive manufacturing team. The successful candidate will be responsible for building, repairing, troubleshooting, and maintaining complex transfer dies and roller die tooling. You will work closely with production to ensure optimal die performance, minimize downtime, and produce high-quality automotive components.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform preventative maintenance (PM) and emergency repairs on
transfer dies,
roller dies, and
roll mill lines
to support production continuity.
- Diagnose and resolve tooling failures, such as poor forming, surface defects, or misalignment, directly at the press.
- Set up and operate manual toolroom machinery (lathes, mills, grinders, drill presses) to fabricate, modify, or repair die components to tight tolerances (often ±.0005").
- Disassemble, fit, and reassemble complex dies on the bench and verify dimensions using calipers, micrometers, and dial indicators.
- Implement engineering changes (ECN) on new and existing large body dies, including re-timing pads and forms.
- Perform GTAW (TIG) welding to repair die sections and grind/polish tools to ensure proper surface finish.
- Work with production personnel to ensure tools are functioning correctly and provide input on tooling design improvements.
Requirements:
- Education/Experience:
Completion of a recognized Tool and Die Maker apprenticeship (Journeyman card) or a minimum of 5-8 years of direct experience in an automotive stamping environment.
- Technical Knowledge:
Proficient in reading and interpreting complex blueprints, CAD drawings, and 3D models.
- Skillset:
Extensive experience with transfer press tooling and rolling mill lines.
- Math Skills:
Strong understanding of trigonometry and geometry for layout and machining.
