CNC Machinist (Contract-to-Hire)
St. Charles, IL | 1st Shift | $27–30/hr + OT
A well-established U.S. manufacturer of custom industrial lifting equipment is seeking a CNC Machinist to join their machine shop due to an upcoming retirement. This is a contract-to-hire opportunity with a clear path to long-term stability and advancement.
This organization has been in business for decades, competes on quality over price, and produces highly customized, engineered products—not high-volume commodity work. If you enjoy machining steel parts that require attention to detail and pride in craftsmanship, this is an excellent environment.
Why This Role Stands Out
- Immediate need with long-term intent – replacing a retiring leader, not backfilling turnover
- Custom, engineered work – no repetitive production runs
- Strong tenure & mentorship – learn from highly experienced machinists who invest in their team
- Promote-from-within culture – leads and foremen all started on the shop floor
- Stable, family-style environment with forward-thinking leadership modernizing operations
What You’ll Be Doing
- Set up and operate CNC mills and/or lathes machining steel components
- Select proper material, tooling, and programs based on BOMs and blueprints
- Perform first-piece inspections and ensure parts meet print specifications
- Make basic program edits as needed (no programming-from-scratch required)
- Maintain machines, tooling, and a clean, organized work area
- Cross-train in additional shop operations over time
What They’re Looking For
Must Have
- 2–3+ years of CNC machining experience (mills or lathes; both preferred)
- Steel machining experience
- Ability to independently set up and run machines (not a button pusher)
- Blueprint, BOM, and GD&T reading ability
- Team-first mentality and strong work ethic
Nice to Have
- Experience editing CNC programs
- Exposure to HAAS, Doosan, or similar CNC equipment
- Interest in leadership and long-term growth
Schedule & Compensation
- Hours: 6:00am–2:30pm (1st shift)
- Overtime: Regular OT expected (10-hour days M–F + occasional Saturdays)
- Pay: $27–30/hour
- Status: 4-month Contract-to-Hire
Additional Notes
- Two-step interview process (phone + onsite shop tour/technical discussion)
- Start date: ASAP
