Nuclear I&C Setpoint and NSSS Controls Engineer

  • Cranberry Township, PA
  • 50 - 60 USD Hourly

Bring Precision to Nuclear Controls — A Day in This Role

This is a WTSS Contractor Opportunity. Join WECTEC Staffing Services to support Westinghouse’s Nuclear Steam Supply System (NSSS) engineering teams. You’ll work a flexible schedule with periodic on-site presence at the Westinghouse offices in Warrendale, PA, and Cranberry Township, PA, collaborating with subject matter experts across nuclear subsystems to deliver safe, reliable plant performance.

What You’ll Work On

  • AP1000 digital controls and legacy analog systems: Own functional design and setpoint determination for control and protection systems; maintain Functional Requirements and Functional Diagrams.
  • Operational transients: Model and analyze I&C logic and settings to confirm acceptable plant response; recommend plant modifications to resolve operational issues.
  • LTOPS analysis: Evaluate low-temperature overpressure scenarios, confirm mitigation capabilities, and develop configuration updates to protect the reactor vessel and piping.
  • NSSS Design Transients: Develop, maintain, and update transients used in component qualification; assess the effects of plant modifications.
  • Setpoint uncertainty (RTS/ESFAS): Perform and maintain Nominal Trip Setpoint (NTS) uncertainty analyses using the NRC-approved Westinghouse Setpoint Methodology (WSM) for AP1000 and other U.S. plants, accounting for process and instrumentation uncertainties (e.g., transmitters, RTDs, process racks, indicators).
  • Surveillance interval extensions: Conduct statistical/data analysis of instrument drift to assess time-dependence, predict performance over longer intervals, and integrate results into setpoint uncertainty analyses.
  • Collaboration and delivery: Meet regularly with your SCS mentor and supervisor; scope and cost-estimate design changes; support schedule creation; prepare clear technical reports for internal and external stakeholders; perform other duties as assigned.

How You’ll Succeed

  • Apply fundamentals in fluid mechanics and thermodynamics to real-world plant scenarios.
  • Evaluate analysis inputs and outputs to shape solutions that align with customer requirements.
  • Communicate findings and recommendations effectively in writing and verbally.
  • Build strong working relationships with customers and cross-functional teams.

Your Background

  • BS in Mechanical or Nuclear Engineering; MS preferred.
  • 10+ years of related experience preferred.
  • Strong technical foundation and eagerness to learn.
  • Knowledge of Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) design/operations highly preferred.
  • Experience with instrumentation for pressure, temperature, level, flow, and power measurement.
  • Experience modeling PWR transients preferred.
  • Basic statistics/data analysis knowledge preferred.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office.

Location & Schedule

Flexible schedule with some on-site requirements in Westinghouse Warrendale, PA and Cranberry Twp. Headquarters offices, as needed.

Compensation
