Industrial Maintenance Mechanic — Plastics Extrusion

Shape the machinery that shapes the world

From a single Rhode Island tire shop in 1924 to a global materials innovator with operations across the U.S., Belgium, Singapore, Germany, and China, Teknor Apex has grown while staying true to its privately held, family-led roots. At our Fountain Inn, South Carolina facility, we’re seeking an Industrial Maintenance Mechanic to keep our extrusion and compounding equipment running at peak performance.

“Manufacturing is a team sport and we work together to achieve our goals.” ~ Jon Fain

A day in this role

You start your shift reviewing CMMS work orders and safety notes. A call comes in from Extrusion—an operator reports fluctuating amperage on a motor drive. You isolate the fault with test instruments, trace the ladder logic to verify I/O, and bring the line back up. Later, you rotate to scheduled PMs on pumps and gearboxes, adjust an air circuit on a blender, help a newer tech interpret a hydraulic schematic, and finish by documenting all work performed while keeping your area spotless.

What you’ll handle

  • Model safe work practices and comply with all safety procedures.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical issues on pumps, motors, gearboxes, plastic extruders, and related production assets.
  • Execute preventive maintenance and close out work orders using CMMS software.
  • Mentor entry-level technicians; work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Use electrical meters and test equipment to verify circuits and components.
  • Troubleshoot AC/DC motors and variable-speed drives.
  • Understand PLC operation; read ladder logic and perform basic PLC troubleshooting.
  • Interpret electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic schematics; follow manuals and technical bulletins.
  • Operate a forklift, scissor lift, and boom lift safely.
  • Use shop machinery and hand tools effectively.
  • Organize work, set priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Maintain excellent housekeeping throughout the plant and shop.
  • Occasionally operate a company truck; a valid driver’s license is required.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
  • Communicate clearly—read procedures and safety rules, write reports/correspondence, and speak with impact.

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • At least 2 years of relevant maintenance experience and an Associate’s degree in a related field, or an equivalent blend of education and experience.
