E&I Controls Technician — Mining and Process Systems

About the Role

At Express Employment Professionals, your expertise keeps complex mining operations running. As an E&I Controls Technician, you’ll begin each shift with a focused safety walk-down, then move seamlessly from calibrating analyzers to diagnosing PLC I/O faults and restoring critical equipment to service—all while upholding MSHA, federal, and state requirements and our company’s rigorous safety policies.

A Day in the Life

  • Start with a structured safety inspection of your assigned areas (at least once per shift), documenting conditions and addressing hazards as they arise.
  • Use portable test instruments and on-board diagnostics to pinpoint faults in electrical, electronic, and instrumentation systems—then repair or replace components to restore accuracy and uptime.
  • Execute preventive maintenance on controls, recorders, gas analyzers, automatic weight devices, and related instrumentation to prevent unplanned downtime.
  • Support construction, upgrades, and equipment modifications by installing control devices, recorders, indicating instruments, SCR drives, and PLCs.
  • Keep work areas clean and orderly to remove slip, trip, and fall risks.
  • Operate mobile equipment when needed—only after proper MSHA task training and with strict adherence to safe operating practices.
  • Assemble the full required tool kit within 90 days of assignment (tool list provided upon hire).

What You’ll Tackle

  • Troubleshooting and repair of AC/DC motor starters, VFDs, and power distribution components.
  • Routine calibration and maintenance on pressure and flow transmitters, RTDs, and thermocouples.
  • Testing with electrical meters, including performing megger checks on motors and cables.
  • Working knowledge of Continuous Emissions Monitoring (CEM) systems.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Dependable and safety-focused, with a strong attendance record.
  • Solid electrical aptitude and troubleshooting capability.
  • Foundational understanding of instrumentation—or the motivation to learn quickly.
  • Basic computer proficiency and willingness to learn control systems and programming.
  • Comfort working independently while communicating clearly and following direction when needed.

Education & Experience

  • At least 4+ years of verifiable electrician experience in mining or heavy industrial settings.
  • Hands-on experience with electrical meters and megger testing of motors/cables.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot VFDs, AC/DC starters, and power distribution equipment.
  • Familiarity with CEM systems, plus experience with pressure/flow transmitters, RTDs, and thermocouples.
