Job Summary
We are seeking a detail-oriented Manufacturing Documentation Specialist to support Engineering and Manufacturing operations by creating, maintaining, and controlling shop instructions, manufacturing travelers, and quality documentation. This role ensures accuracy, compliance, and efficiency across production processes while supporting on-time delivery of manufactured products.
This position plays a key role in document control, shop floor communication, quality assurance support, and manufacturing process improvement.
Key Responsibilities
Shop Instructions & Document Control
- Create, update, and maintain manufacturing shop instructions and travelers
- Ensure all documentation reflects current engineering revisions and manufacturing processes
- Record part numbers, materials, components, and step-by-step manufacturing sequences
- Maintain strict version control and document accuracy
Shop Floor Support & Maintenance
- Track, distribute, and monitor all active shop travelers
- Verify completeness, accuracy, and clarity of manufacturing documentation
- Conduct audits and spot checks of in-process work orders
- Coordinate corrections with shop and engineering teams as needed
Engineering & Manufacturing Collaboration
- Participate in engineering design reviews and capture manufacturing input
- Improve manufacturability through clear, concise work instructions
- Support alignment between engineering intent and shop floor execution
Reporting & Communication
- Track status of shop instructions (active, pending, completed)
- Provide documentation metrics and reporting to manufacturing leadership
- Communicate daily updates to supervisors on traveler status and changes
Quality & Training Support
- Assist in ensuring compliance with QA programs and manufacturing procedures
- Support training efforts related to documentation and process adherence
- Help compile customer data packages and quality verification documents
Continuous Improvement
- Identify opportunities to improve documentation clarity and manufacturing efficiency
- Reduce process complexity and eliminate unnecessary steps
- Support lean manufacturing and process optimization initiatives
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 3 years of experience in a manufacturing environment (or equivalent education/experience)
- Strong understanding of manufacturing processes and shop floor operations
- Ability to read blueprints and technical drawings
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
- Strong attention to detail and document accuracy
- Excellent communication and organizational skills
- Basic math skills (including fractions) and tape measure proficiency
- Ability to work independently and within a team environment
Additional Requirements
- Must pass a criminal background check
- Must be a U.S. Citizen
Preferred Experience
- Manufacturing, fabrication, welding, or industrial production environments
- Quality control or document control experience
- Familiarity with shop travelers, SOPs, and QA documentation systems
Work Environment
- Office-based role with occasional shop floor exposure
- Exposure to industrial manufacturing environment when needed
- May require standing, walking, and light lifting (up to 25 lbs)
