Industrial Controls Technician — Robotic Welding Systems

What you'll do

Leadership & Safety

  • Mentor Automation Technicians I–III and Weld Technicians as appropriate.
  • Meet or exceed the full responsibilities expected of an Automation Technician III.
  • Adhere to all safety policies and service/maintenance protocols.

Electrical & Mechanical Troubleshooting

  • Interpret electrical/mechanical prints to diagnose at an advanced level.
  • With electrician supervision, execute intermediate tasks: connect circuit breakers/transformers; build and route wiring harnesses; service drive systems; replace relays, boards, and motors.

Robotics & PLC/HMI

  • Perform intermediate robot programming and basic offline programming with RoboCAD/RobotStudio (TCP verification, I/O simulation, move creation/modification, zone setups).
  • For senior scope, show proficiency in at least two areas: add sensors/sequence changes in PLCs; read and troubleshoot ladder logic; program PanelView HMI; configure and troubleshoot I/O blocks; search/cross‑reference/edit code; troubleshoot HMIs; load programs; replace logic modules/screens; reset systems, IP addresses, and names; troubleshoot valve stacks; apply intermediate robot programming methods; load IDs; perform gun tuning; and add valves/I/O blocks.

Welding Systems

  • Resolve intermediate issues across drawn arc, GMAW, resistance, and projection welding, including associated pneumatic systems.
  • Program robots offline (write routines); set up/troubleshoot tool changers and external axes.
  • Create/verify TCP (ABB Bullseye experience is a plus) and build offset positions.
  • Rebuild/reload weld schedules; implement RAFT and Emhart DA changes per Weld Engineering direction.
  • Conduct specialty equipment PMs; implement MIG schedule updates per Weld Engineering.
  • Perform cap/electrode studies and weld validation; calibrate squeeze force on spot‑weld guns.
  • Troubleshoot drawn‑arc stud welding (including basic programming) and configure projection welds.
  • Apply working knowledge of the Miyachi Weld Tester.

Tooling, Measurement & Error‑Proofing

  • Use hand measuring tools, multimeters, ammeters, welding current meters, digital force gauges, and micro‑ohm meters at an advanced level.
  • Execute minor shim moves and fixture adjustments per manufacturing details (with guidance from a Weld Maintenance Mechanic III or Manufacturing Engineer); understand shimming processes.
  • Set up and troubleshoot Poka‑Yoke applications.

Shifts

  • 1st: 5:30am – 1:30pm (Mon–Fri)
  • 2nd: 1:30pm – 9:30pm (Mon–Fri)
  • 3rd: 9:30pm – 5:30am (Sun–Thu)

Flexibility for early starts, late finishes, and some weekends may be required to meet customer commitments.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to obtain industrial truck and aerial platform licenses.
  • Strong verbal communication.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook.
  • Completion of Automation Technician II written and performance tests (internal candidates).
  • Completion of Automation Technician II written and performance tests (internal and external candidates).
  • Knowledge of PLC systems and intermediate programming methods.
  • Industrial Maintenance/Machine Repair/Electrician Journeyman certification, or 2‑year technical degree, or equivalent experience.
  • At least 3 years of experience as a Weld or Automation Technician (or equivalent).
  • Preferred: mechatronics certificate or journeyperson card; associate degree in mechatronics/controls/maintenance; 10+ years combined experience and education.
  • Strong electrical and mechanical foundation in industrial/automated systems.
  • On‑site PPE: steel‑toed boots and hard hat required.

Proficiencies

  • PLC troubleshooting/programming, industrial/manufacturing engineering, electrical schematics, robotics programming, automation troubleshooting, CAD familiarity, production optimization, and electrical/electronic systems.

Machines & Technologies

  • MIG/TIG welders; robotic welders; industrial robots (Kawasaki, Universal Robots, Fanuc); CNC automation (Fanuc); HMIs; CAD tools; automotive manufacturing systems.
