Engineering Manager (Backend)

About the role
Our client is a Series A startup with a high-performing engineering team of around 25 people. They are hiring an Engineering Manager (Backend) to lead a team of 6 to 8 backend engineers shipping the core platform. Full-time, on-site in Boston.

What you will do

  • Coach and grow a team of senior backend engineers
  • Own delivery: scoping, planning, prioritization, and execution
  • Stay technically engaged: code review, architecture, hiring loops
  • Partner with product and design on roadmap and trade-offs
  • Improve engineering quality: testing, observability, on-call

What we are looking for

  • 2+ years managing backend engineers, plus a strong IC background before that
  • Comfortable being the hiring lead: sourcing, interviews, calibration
  • Comfortable in a typed backend stack (Go, Java, TypeScript, or Rust)
  • Strong written communication and async clarity
  • Bonus: experience scaling teams through hypergrowth
