Junior Design Engineer

About the Role

A bootstrapped, profitable SaaS toolkit for storytellers — worldbuilders, writers, and tabletop RPG creators — is looking for a Junior Design Engineer to help shape the product from the ground up. This is a rare early-stage opportunity where you'll own work end-to-end, shipping features that reach a large and passionate creative community.

The team believes AI should empower human creativity, not replace it. You'll use AI-native development tools every day as a core part of your workflow, not as an afterthought.

What You'll Do

  • Build features end-to-end with guidance from the founding team, growing toward full autonomy over 6–12 months
  • Contribute meaningfully to the front-end experience: layout, interaction, motion, and polish
  • Translate Figma designs into high-quality, production-ready React/TypeScript components
  • Work with SQL/PostgreSQL to support data-driven UI patterns
  • Use AI-powered dev tools (e.g., Cursor, Claude Code) daily to move fast and ship quality work
  • Iterate quickly alongside founders and learn at startup speed

What We're Looking For

Required:

  • 0–3 years of professional frontend development experience with React and TypeScript
  • Experience building features with Next.js in production applications
  • A strong portfolio demonstrating tasteful UI/UX design, motion/interaction, and shipped frontend work — this is the #1 filter
  • Proficiency with Figma for design-to-implementation handoff
  • Experience with SQL / PostgreSQL and data-driven UI patterns
  • Familiarity with or strong willingness to adopt AI-powered development tools (Cursor, Claude Code)
  • Based in Canada or Western Europe (Germany, UK, or France) with ability to work fully remotely
  • Collaborative, fast learner who can work closely with a small founding team

Strong bonus signals:

  • Indie or hobby projects with great motion or interaction design
  • Interest in worldbuilding, fiction writing, or tabletop RPGs
  • Background in creative tools, game development, or creative SaaS

Compensation & Details

  • Salary: $90,000 – $110,000 USD annually
  • Employment type: Full-time
  • Work arrangement: Fully remote
  • Visa sponsorship: Not available

Location

Fully remote. Candidates must be based in Canada (Montreal, Toronto, or Vancouver preferred) or Western Europe (Germany, UK, or France).
