Senior Structural Systems Design Engineer, Warehouse Automation

Shape the backbone of automated warehouses

Step into a day where you open a new project brief, sketch an initial concept for a storage system frame, and by afternoon you’re validating it with FEA and iterating alongside manufacturing. As the Senior Structural Systems Design Engineer on our Layout Engineering team, you’ll guide mechanical concepts from idea to installation, partnering closely with our Structures group to maintain and evolve a robust catalog of structural components used across customer storage solutions.

Team at a glance

Layout Engineering sits within our Manufacturing & Supply Chain organization. We develop warehouse layouts for customers, coordinate supply chain execution, and support installation teams—constantly refining designs through internal and customer feedback to reduce material cost and accelerate project lead times.

A week in the role

  • Translate site requirements into detailed 3D models in SolidWorks for structural parts and assemblies tailored to each warehouse layout.
  • Run FEA (SolidWorks Simulation or Ansys) and tolerance analyses to strengthen performance while controlling cost and manufacturability.
  • Collaborate daily with structural, electrical, software, controls, manufacturing, and quality engineers to ensure seamless integration.
  • Prototype and test in our labs, then iterate quickly using SolidWorks to shorten design cycles.
  • Publish clear drawings with GD&T to ANSI Y14.5 standards; own BOMs and ECOs in our PLM environment.
  • Contribute to and curate the structures catalog that powers our storage system designs across programs.

What you’ll own

  • End-to-end design of complex structural components for site-specific layouts.
  • Root-cause analysis and resolution of design issues; drive continuous improvement in form, fit, and function.
  • Clear communication of technical decisions to audiences ranging from technicians to executives.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering.
  • 7+ years of mechanical design experience, including hands-on work with electromechanical systems.
  • Expert-level SolidWorks for 3D design, assemblies, and drafting; FEA with SolidWorks Simulation or Ansys preferred.
  • Proven selection and integration of motors, sensors, and actuators.
  • Working knowledge of machining, casting, sheet metal, and plastics manufacturing.
  • Experience with DFMA and familiarity with PLM tools.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills; collaborative mindset.
  • Enthusiasm for robotics, automation, and innovation; background in industrial robotics, automation, or material handling is a plus.

Where you’ll work

  • On-site, full-time presence at our Wilmington, MA headquarters.
  • Travel up to 20% to customer sites and project locations; valid driver’s license and ability to drive and/or fly required.
  • Employees use a personal credit card for business expenses with reimbursement provided on a bi-weekly cycle.
