Substation Project Engineer

  • Denver, CO
  • 72 - 77 USD Hourly

About the role:

Denver, CO

As a Substation Project Engineer, you will help support day‑to‑day maintenance and equipment replacement across substations. You will focus on brownfield engineering—building like‑for‑like equipment replacements, troubleshooting field issues, and ensuring the safe and reliable operation of existing substation assets. In this hybrid role, your typical week includes Mon/Fri remote work and Tue–Thu onsite at the Denver office, with regular substation field visits. We count field time toward your normal hours, and we expect no routine overtime.

You will scope and lead equipment replacement projects, including breakers, switches, transformers, relays, bushings, and arresters. You will prepare and manage work packages, initiate and coordinate material requisitions. You will partner with construction, substation maintenance crews, and your team to provide high-quality engineering solutions. Your work supports the continued reliability, safety, and performance of critical grid infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Scope, plan, and lead like‑for‑like substation equipment replacements
  • Adjust and update brownfield designs based on field conditions
  • Troubleshoot equipment failures and develop corrective actions
  • Create or refine engineering documents, drawings, and work packages
  • Conduct site visits to evaluate existing conditions
  • Support field crews during troubleshooting and project execution
  • Verify equipment installations and perform construction observation
  • Initiate projects and order required materials
  • Track schedules, coordinate with construction supervisors, and ensure work readiness

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Knowledge of substation equipment
  • Familiarity with brownfield engineering and maintenance workflows
  • Initiate projects, coordinate materials, and manage team member communication
