Production Engineer

Location: Columbus, IN

Pay: $30–$44/hr (DOE)

Schedule: Day shift aligned with production (typically 6:30 AM–3:30/3:45 PM depending on daily production requirements)

About the Opportunity

Aegis Worldwide is seeking three Production Engineers to support long-term capital projects, automation initiatives, and large-scale process improvements. This is a highly visible role supporting future production capacity, new equipment installation, and strategic engineering upgrades across the plant.

Position Overview

These roles sit within the Production Engineering group and focus heavily on project planning, automation integration, process optimization, and long-term capacity planning. Engineers in this group work closely with outside integrators, internal engineering teams, and production associates to design, evaluate, and implement new technology and equipment.

The work is approximately 80% planning/project management and 20% hands-on, with heavy involvement during plant shutdowns and major installation phases.

Key Responsibilities

Production & Process Improvement

  • Identify and implement improvements to safety, quality, productivity, and material flow

  • Reduce equipment downtime and manufacturing environmental impact

  • Develop and optimize welding processes

  • Integrate automation and new technology to meet future production demands

  • Support capacity planning aligned to long-term sales forecasts

  • Utilize KPIs, project schedules, and budgeting to manage improvement projects

Capital Projects & Automation

  • Conduct time studies, process mapping, and evaluations for upcoming equipment installations

  • Prepare complete justification packets for new machinery and automation projects

  • Coordinate with external vendors and integrators on design, testing, debugging, and installation

  • Support equipment commissioning, retesting, and validation

  • Participate in major shutdown activities (July & December) for installations and line upgrades

Welding-Focused Responsibilities

  • Conceptualize fixture designs for welded assemblies

  • Troubleshoot quality issues using drawings, inspection reports, and mechanical understanding

  • Investigate and optimize welding/automation equipment (robotic welding experience preferred but not required)

  • Become the technical expert for assigned welding area

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work with production teams, engineers, maintenance, and external vendors

  • Support kaizen events including hands-on improvements to equipment and materials handling

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Industrial, Electrical Engineering, or Engineering Technology

  • Internship or co-op experience required for new graduates

  • Strong technical aptitude, problem-solving ability, and troubleshooting skills

  • Understanding of manufacturing methods: welding, cutting, machining, etc.

  • Ability to read and interpret drawings and measurement methods

Preferred

  • 2–5 years of hands-on production or manufacturing engineering experience

  • Experience with automation, robotics, or capital equipment implementation

  • Exposure to welding processes or robotic welding systems

  • Project management experience (scheduling, budgeting, KPI tracking)

Additional Details

  • Typical day ends once production concludes (approx. 3:30–3:45 PM)

  • Expect heavier workloads during holiday and mid-year shutdowns

  • Projects run 16–52 weeks, involving vendor meetings, testing, debugging, and implementation

  • Strong upward mobility once hired full-time
