Automation Engineer – Tool & Die / Metal Stamping

Position Summary

The Automation Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining automated systems to support tool and die operations, metal stamping processes, and secondary equipment. This role focuses on improving efficiency, reducing downtime, and enhancing quality through the integration of robotics, controls, and automation technologies in a high-volume manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement automation systems for stamping presses, die operations, and secondary processes (welding, assembly, inspection)
  • Program and troubleshoot PLCs (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, etc.), HMIs, and motion control systems
  • Integrate and maintain robotic systems (e.g., FANUC, ABB, KUKA) for part handling, transfer, and end-of-arm tooling
  • Support die protection systems, sensors, and vision systems to prevent tooling damage and ensure part quality
  • Develop and optimize automated material handling systems (conveyors, feeders, destackers, transfer systems)
  • Collaborate with tool & die, maintenance, and production teams to improve cycle time, uptime, and process reliability
  • Diagnose and resolve automation and controls-related issues on presses and auxiliary equipment
  • Lead or support continuous improvement initiatives focused on automation upgrades and process optimization
  • Create and maintain electrical schematics, control documentation, and standard operating procedures
  • Assist with new equipment installation, commissioning, and run-off
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards (OSHA, lockout/tagout, machine guarding)

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 3+ years of experience in industrial automation, preferably in tool & die, stamping, or automotive manufacturing
  • Strong experience with PLC programming and troubleshooting (Allen-Bradley preferred)
  • Familiarity with robot programming and integration
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, and process layouts
  • Experience with sensors, vision systems, and die protection technologies

  • Hands-on experience with press automation and stamping operations
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize tasks effectively
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills across engineering, maintenance, and production
