Senior Test Tank Welding Lead

Step onto the test tank floor at BAC and you’ll own the final word on coil integrity. In this hourly, shop-based role, you lead by example—testing every coil, repairing every leak, and mentoring mechanics so the next shift is always better than the last. You’ll model BAC’s values of Earning Trust, Embracing Responsibility, Showing Courage, and Driving Innovation with a simple purpose: doing the right thing in the right way.

A Day on the Test Tank

  • Begin with a safety huddle—reinforcing PPE, equipment checks, and safe work practices for yourself and the team.
  • Review the day’s schedule and work tickets; organize flow so completed coils move cleanly to the next operation.
  • Pressure-test coils, pinpoint and repair leaks (tube-to-tube, headers, and tube repairs), then verify quality before release.
  • Update and post daily metrics—leak rates and coil quality traveler status—keeping the Quality metric report accurate at all times.
  • Log coil proficiency in a shared spreadsheet, adding comments and actions taken to drive learning.
  • Collaborate with Team Lead, Station Lead, Inspectors, and Supply Chain to resolve discrepancies and keep work moving.
  • Complete ISO documentation every day; sustain 5S so the test area stays inspection-ready.
  • Mentor junior mechanics, share lessons learned, and coach on process improvements and LEAN principles.
  • Continuously improve: participate in CI projects, report near misses, and implement safer, smarter methods.
  • Champion sustainability by reducing waste, maximizing recycling, and minimizing energy and water use.
  • Support a culture of innovation—turn practical ideas into measurable business results.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by plant leadership.

How You’ll Lead

  • Own personal and team safety; use the right tools and PPE every time.
  • Train mechanics in test tank techniques, document lessons learned, and reinforce standard work.
  • Help the department hit safety goals through near-miss reporting and safety metric improvements.

Reporting Line

This position reports to the Station Lead and Team Lead of the Coil Department.

  • Strong product knowledge of coil and assembly processes; general knowledge of BAC equipment construction.
  • Working knowledge of welding symbols; able to read BAC assembly, fabrication, and welding drawings.
  • Comfort with basic math and handheld measuring tools; read ruler, combination square, protractor, metal gauge, and micrometer.
  • Proficient in oxy-fuel and plasma arc burning; experienced with test tank tube-to-tube/tube repairs and header repairs.
  • Understands bill of material; certified to operate overhead crane and jib boom with awareness of balance and load limits.
  • Grounded in LEAN and Continuous Improvement; disciplined with ISO procedures, policies, and work instructions.
  • Uncompromising commitment to safety; recognizes hazards and takes appropriate precautions.
